Woman, 53, Became Gestational Carrier for Her Daughter Who Got Pregnant at the Same Time after Years of Infertility

Not long after her mother entered the pregnancy ward, Kelsi Pierce herself also gave birth. Insanely, these two babies turned out to be sisters! However, the journey of how they got there is even more jaw-dropping than the births themselves!

Thirty-one-year-old Kelsi Pierce met her husband, Kyle Pierce, at a bar while both were watching a hockey game. Although their teams were in opposition, the two were definitely on the same side.

Kelsi and Kyle got married in 2016, and now both reside in Minnesota. Their romantic life was natural and smooth sailing, but their luck ran out when it came to conceiving a child.

A Jarred Journey
Initially, doctors told the couple that Kelsi had a low ovarian reserve. However, following in-vitro fertilization (IVF), they found she couldn’t carry a pregnancy due to her uterus’s lining, which was too thin.

They spent two years and all their savings trying to get pregnant, but nothing worked. Eventually, the doctors told Kelsi that conceiving was something that was never going to happen in her lifetime.

Medical professionals recommended the couple either adopt or look for a gestational carrier. A gestational carrier would be someone willing to carry an embryo sourced from the IVF of the two biological parents.

Running Out of Cash
The idea was tempting to the Pierces, but it seemed impossible as the process cost $100,000, with the couple having depleted their funds. Nevertheless, Kelsi’s mother had a crazy idea. Looking back, then 53-year-old Lisa Rutherford expressed:

“I just thought I don’t have $100,000 to hand you, but this is what I can do to make your dream come true. It wasn’t even a question.”

As the Michigan resident was in her 50s, it was unclear whether she would be able to carry a pregnancy to term as a gestational carrier or if it would be detrimental to her health. Although some medical professionals were hesitant, the procedure was finally approved.

Jinx, You Owe Me a Baby!
In December 2019, the loving parent was preparing to attempt to get pregnant with her daughter’s baby. By February the following year, Lisa was with child with the revelation leaving the whole family ecstatic!

However, an even more unbelievable incident was about to occur in March later that year. After taking a pregnancy test, as she did habitually every month, Kelsi found out that she was also pregnant!

Like Mother, like Daughter
The experience of being pregnant at the same time was enjoyable for Lisa and her daughter, who both relished going through the different stages together. Kelsi’s mother recollected:

“It was an awesome experience…Not only was I so excited for Kelsi to be able to carry a baby, but it was so fun to share our experiences with each other.”

The two shared an even closer bond as they exchanged advice and tips, talked about their cravings, and FaceTimed one another while in medical appointments. Eventually, the time came for the Pierces’ children to be born!

The Big Day Is Here!
Finally, they both had the babies only about two months apart. Due to preeclampsia – a condition Lisa discovered during her 36th-week appointment – the new onset of high blood pressure meant she had to welcome her baby within 12 hours and through a C-section.

Kelsi and her husband almost missed the birth and had to rush and drive to Michigan, and luckily, they made it right on time to see Lisa giving birth earlier than expected on October 1, 2020. Baby Everly suffered complications like coming out with no color, and she also didn’t cry upon her birth.

Lisa’s daughter recalled how they weren’t allowed to see or hold the little girl immediately as she was transferred to another hospital. The medical center had a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), with Kelsi lamenting:

“We had waited so long, and I just wanted to hold my baby.”

Fortunately, Everly’s health progressed well, and on October 6, Kelsi’s birthday (around a week after the birth), the little girl was discharged from the NICU. The Pierces stayed for a week in Lisa’s state after their daughter’s birth to see Everly before driving back to Minnesota with Kelsi’s mother.

Together, they prepared for the upcoming birth with baby Ava coming into the world on November 23, 2020, ready to say “Hi” to the world and her older sister. Over the years, Kelsi and her husband have shown their daughters’ growth spurts.

An Experience Like No Other with Kelsi’s Children Growing Up Quickly
Since Kelsi’s become an official parent, she and her mother are elated, with Lisa stating that her daughter is a natural mother. The mother of two stated:

“It still feels surreal to me… It’s just so amazing. I just stare at them for however long, and I’m just like, ‘I can’t believe you’re mine.’”

These feelings make sense as they were once a dream that she can now wake up to every day. Kelsi now has the beautiful experience of loving her daughters unconditionally and doing whatever she can to make them happy – just like her mother so clearly does for her.

On September 18, 2021, Kyle showed how their look-a-like daughters are growing fast. In the first image, he and his wife appeared on what looked like a sports field, smiling while holding their babies, who wore matching outfits.

The second photo showed the happy parents posing with their daughters at the beach. On May 27, 2023, Kelsi revealed how much Everly and Ava had grown into gorgeous toddlers, with the pair dressed in matching dresses, shoes, and fun sunglasses while on an outing.
