The tragic love story between figure skates which didn’t end happily
Today we are going to tell you about a legendary story of the purest and unconditional love between two talented figure skaters which, misfortunately, didn’t end happily.
Sergey Grinkov and Katya Gordeeva attended the same school and were trained in the same section but initially they weren’t familiar with each other. They both did everything in order to specialize and become professional figure skaters. Once their trainers realized they both showed great potential, they decided to join them and Seryozha and Katya became partners. At that time, they were still children. Seryozha was 14 and Katya was only 10. But the pair of an absolutely adorable and miniature girl and a handsome and passionate teenager appeared to be very beautiful and harmonious.
Soon they started to achieve great success. They were actively participating in many contests and competitions and were even rewarded golden medals.
Initially Katya treated him as her brother and was really happy to be partners exactly with him. On her 16th birthday, Sergey gave the girl a perfume and a soft toy after which the teenagers realized they felt something more towards each other.
At the Olympics, held in the 88th year of the previous century in Canada, the admirable couple brilliantly performed to a fateful melody – the march written by Mendelssohn which then was regarded the anthem of loving hearts. In 1991, Seryozha and Katya got married and soon their daughter named Dasha was born.
While Dasha was growing up, they returned and kept delighting people with their excellent performance on the Ice. The spouses even participated in a popular American show “Star on Ice”.
In a couple of years, the pair was training hard for another ice show. There were no signs of trouble. And although Sergey was concerned about his injured back, the pains were quite bearable. But while practicing the next technique, Grinkov suddenly bent over in an unnatural position, and then fell on the icy surface. They immediately called emergency and Sergey was sent to hospital. The doctors, unfortunately, were not able to undertake anything to save Sergey and Katya was left lonely. The cause of the sudden death of a talented athlete who had never had health problems was a heart attack.
It goes without saying that for Katya the loss was tragic and irreversible. She got heartbroken and had no wish to continue living without her beloved man. Her family s supported her and the poor girl was able to return to the ice and perform for her late husband.
At the beginning of the 2000s, Gordeeva was able to partly get it over and even started a new relationship with her colleague Ilya Kulik. In 2002, they married and had a daughter named Liza. But the couple couldn’t live long with each other and, unfortunately, divorced. Perhaps, Ilya failed to replace Sergey.
And now, according to some rumors, Katya began a relationship with a figure skater from Canada – David Pelettier. But the story of a tragic love will never leave her heart.
