“Good Morning America” anchor Lara Spencer has been married to Rick McVey for over five years. Spencer is also a doting mom of two.
The TV presenter showcased her home in Connecticut, a mix of modern and vintage aesthetics.
Spencer’s minimalist style and love for unique light fixtures are evident, creating a cozy space for her family. Birthday celebrations and adventures add joy to her mid-50s.
Lara Spencer has been married twice and is now with her husband, Rick McVey. The two dated for nearly two years before they got married. Their love story started after they were set up on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend.
Spencer was previously married to former reporter and real estate broker David Haffenreffer. The pair got married in 2000 in Southampton. In 2009, they moved from Los Angeles and settled in New York.
The exes share two children, a daughter, Katherine, and a son, Duff. Haffenreffer and Spencer spent 15 years together before they announced their amicable divorce. The two said the decision to part ways didn’t come easy, especially since they respected and loved each other, including their kids.
They noted that their children “remain our top priority. We will raise them and care for them together.” After the divorce, Haffenreffer and Spencer remained friends and even went on vacations together with their children. In a birthday post on August 2, 2017, Spencer also called her ex-husband “the best dad our kids could ever ask for.”
Spencer, who co-hosted “Good Morning America” (GMA) with Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and Michael Stranus, moved on after her first marriage. She met McVey, and they got engaged in 2018. McVey, who is also a dad to three daughters with his ex, is the founder, chairman, and CEO of MarketAxess, a publicly traded and prosperous financial technology (fintech) firm.
McVey took a bold step in creating his firm in 2000, which strived to break down Wall Street’s persevering resistance to electronic bond trading. MarketAxess now runs a premier electronic trading platform, enhancing overall trading efficiency.
On September 1, 2018, Spencer and McVey exchanged vows in an outdoor ceremony in Vail, Colorado. The TV presenter walked down the aisle to Christina Perri’s song “A Thousand Years” and got married in front of 135 friends and family.
Spencer looked stunning in a sleeveless Adam Zohar lace gown with a mermaid skirt and sheer cutouts. The TV presenter’s outfit was complimented with a hand-tied bouquet, which had white dahlias, freesia, and garden roses. The couple’s four-tiered wedding cake incorporated berries, cream, chocolate decadence, and confetti.
Spencer’s son Duff escorted her down the aisle. In January 2024, the TV presenter shared a cute video of Duff walking her to get married. She shared the video alongside pictures of Duff at different ages in life in celebration of his birthday. Duff was born on January 22, 2002.
The mom of two wrote that his son filled in for her beloved dad. He wished Duff a year filled with wonderful adventures, good health, happiness, and lots of laughter. Spencer added “The day I gave birth to this kid–and my life as a mom began. I love you my Duff.”
Spencer and her husband have now been in each other’s lives for more than five years. On September 1, 2023, the TV presenter shared gorgeous pictures of the two from their wedding in celebration of their five years of marriage. She captioned the post, “5 years ago today, baby! Happy Anniversary to my partner in crime, confidante, and best friend. ”
Spencer and McVey have a beautiful home in Connecticut. The exterior of the large home is well-designed with Georgian-style pillars, an angular light fitting, black windows and doors, and a sculpted dog she got from a flea market.
The TV presenter’s living room has floor-to-ceiling windows, giving it lots of light. Spencer’s color theme is muted, as the couch and sitting room chairs are off-white and have a light gray color scheme. Multiple gray mats line up the floor, and the gray cabinet hosts trophies and other artifacts.
Paintings brighten the star’s living room, as well as gorgeous chandeliers, which add another level of grandeur to the place. Spencer, who loves her monochromatic living room, advised her followers to go for different textures if they wanted a light and bright one-color theme.
The TV presenter’s dining room is a mix of collectibles, made up of the new and the old. Her dining chairs as well as tables are white. However, she has some brightly colored paintings on the wall to cheer up the space. The light fixtures are cool and unique, standing out in the dark room.
Spencer, who has a penchant for one-of-a-kind light fixtures, advised her fans to think of them as jewelry so that they can have really lots of fun with them. Her house is filled with eccentric light fixtures, including ones with golden tassels, spikes, and geometric elements. Spencer collects these items from the flea market.
Spencer’s family room is also well-lit. Her favorite part about the room is the expansive windows. The family room has a TV hanging on the wall. The couches are light gray, but the carpet is dark gray, and the table is brown. The ceiling is made of wood, and on it hangs three hand-made bamboo chandeliers.
Spencer then showed off her house’s corridor, lined with a dark gray carpet. Windows let in fresh air, and lights line up the corridor, as well as some paintings. The corridor’s wall-mounted lights add to its beauty.
The TV presenter then headed up a flight of stairs, whose railings and walls were painted white. She revealed her picture room, which had a wall filled with family photos. Spencer also had pictures and frames that she intended to add to the family wall. The wall, painted navy blue, ensures the pictures stand out.
Spencer hoped to fill the wall all the way down to her basement with pictures of her kids and memories of her family. The TV presenter’s basement stands out. It has been converted into the “Good Morning America” studio in Connecticut.
The magnificent basement is lined up with bright and colorful paintings on the wall. The wildly colorful basement is decked with a large velvet blue sofa and an assortment of pillows. On one side are gray armchairs, while on a different side of the room is a wide brown table with comfy blue lounge chairs.
The basement is also used for family gatherings, as Spencer’s kids love going down there with friends. A poker table is situated next to a wall written and illuminated, “Take It Easy.” Next to the poker table is another sitting area with silver-colored chairs and a round table. Finally, Spencer showed off what she called “Mummy’s heaven.”
The heaven is a wine cellar featuring an entire wall filled with columns of wine bottles horizontally stacked. Spencer has created a cozy home with items from the flea market as well as modern ones.
When renovating an old guest house at the back of her property during the quarantine period, she shared the finished look on Instagram, writing, “I had to get very creative with my existing finds from flea markets and thrift stores along the way.” Armed with creativity, Spencer enjoys staying in her home with a minimalist style alongside her family.
Spencer, who turned 54 on June 19, 2023, said she was a “very lucky girl” as she celebrated her birthday. She shared a gorgeous picture of her, her husband, and kids as they showed off the birthday cake adorned with lit candles.
At 54, Spencer is still enjoying life and learning new things. She learned to sail in 2023 with her friend Ally and shared a video of themselves in open waters. The two learned how to rig their own boat and were enjoying themselves. In her mid-50s, Spencer is blessed with a fun life and love from her husband, kids, and friends.
