That said, things changed when she met Pacino. The actor thought the arrangement the Duke and D’Angelo had was “crazy.” He also said he couldn’t believe she was already married, since he knew she would be the mother of his children. Luckily for him, D’Angelo had fallen in love with him as well. She remembered:

“He went, ‘Oh, that’s ridiculous. Who thinks this is crazy, this perfect relationship? Who is this actor?’ I said, ‘Well, it’s Al Pacino.’ He goes, ‘Al Pacino, he’s fantastic. I love him. We divorce!’”

So, the two divorced but remained good friends, and D’Angelo started dating Pacino in 1997. They never planned on marrying, but they were deeply in love, and the actor suggested they should have children together. D’Angelo fell pregnant at 48, and she delivered the twins at the age of 49.

The actress initially imagined children only happened in a traditional family setting, but when Pacino proposed the idea, she knew it was what she wanted as well. Unfortunately, their relationship didn’t last. When D’Angelo was 51, the two broke up, and she became a single parent.

Luckily, the two didn’t give each other the cold shoulder. Although Pacino and D’Angelo were initially involved in a custody battle over their kids, they reached an acceptable agreement. The “American History X” actress further said it taught her the importance of acceptance.

D’Angelo remarked that the thing she realized most after her separation from Pacino is that acceptance is key after a breakup. By the end of their relationship, she knew there were some things about her partner she could not change, and she had to stop holding on.

Now, years after their breakup, D’Angelo is extraordinarily grateful for the time she had with Pacino. She said her kids provide her with endless joy, and gushed, “The greatest gift that Al ever gave me was to make me a mother.”
