Suzanne Somers and her husband, Alan Hamel, were married for 46 years before the actress passed away. She died of breast cancer on October 15, 2023, a day before her 77th birthday.

Somers and Hamel dated for close to a decade before they tied the knot in 1977. The two met in 1969 when the actress’s husband was hosting ABC’s “The Anniversary Game,” and Somers was a prize model.

The couple had a strong and happy marriage and were even business partners. However, they also encountered pain as a couple when Somers was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000. In July 2023, the movie star revealed on an Instagram post that she had been battling cancer on and off over the years and that the illness was back again.

This time, Somers didn’t survive the illness. Her husband recently said in an interview with NBC News that he knew her end days were near.

Ironically, three days before she died, Somers seemed to be doing better. She had just been brought home after spending six weeks with specialists in Chicago. However, after spending those few days at home, her health took a turn for the worse.

One of her grandkids, Violet, wrote a tribute to Somers on Instagram, thanking the actress for loving her.

Hamel noted that “all of a sudden,” the actress wasn’t responding, eating, or taking her medicines. Hamel wondered if he should call 911, but he knew his wife didn’t want to be taken to the hospital anymore. So, he just spent every night speaking to her, and he felt like she was responding as her lips would move.

Hamel revealed that during the actress’s final days, they would lay in bed together, and he would talk to her for hours. However, he could feel that her breathing was erratic. Somers wasn’t responding to anything except when Hamel would kiss her.

Unfortunately, at around 5 a.m. Somers breathed her last. Hamel said she died peacefully after using every form of medicine to fight for her life.

Hamel is glad that he has the support of his family as he mourns his wife. Despite being hit hard by the actress’s death, he cherishes the love they shared. In light of the love they shared, he wrote a love letter bearing his heart out to his wife a day before her death.

Hamel wrote a poem to Somers that she read the night before she died. He shared the letter on Somers’ Instagram. Written in all caps, it read, “LOVE. THERE IS NO VERSION OF THE WORD THAT IS APPLICABLE TO SUZANNE. THE CLOSEST VERSION IN WORDS ISN’T EVEN CLOSE.”

The actress’s husband describes his unconditional feelings for his wife in the letter, cherishing the 55 years they were together and the 46 years they spent married. He concludes the poem by telling Somers, “WE ARE ONE. I AM IN LOVE WITH YOU, MY BEAUTIFUL SUZANNE, FOR ALL OF ETERNITY.”

Following her demise, Somers has also been celebrated by her kids. The actress has left behind one child, Bruce Jr., whom she had with her ex-husband Bruce Somers. She has also left behind two stepchildren, Leslie and Stephen, from her husband’s previous marriage. The actress is also survived by six grandchildren.

One of her grandkids, Violet, wrote a tribute to Somers on Instagram, thanking the actress for loving her. Violet said she missed her grandma already, noting that she would miss her eating cake and singing at the dinner table.

Bruce also wrote a tribute to Somers on Instagram and thanked her for being the best mom a son could ever want. He described his mom as a brave warrior, “a friend, a wife, a sister, a daughter, an entertainer, an icon, and a legend.”

Somers will be deeply missed by her family, who have shown how deep their love for the actress is. The actress passed away surrounded by this love as her family and close friends had gathered to celebrate her birthday. Instead, they cherished and rejoiced in the fulfilling and loving life Somers led.
